Summer of Modernism

2009 is turning out to be the year of Modernism.

5280mod and Historic Denver, Inc. have already co-lead two Modernism Tours in 2009…one for Colorado Preservation, Inc.’s annual conference and another for the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Partners Retreat.

We are very encouraged to see mid-century modern architecture achieving historically significant status. There a handful of one-owner, architect designed, mid-century modern homes coming available in the next few weeks and months. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing and preserving an historic modern home.

We hope to see you on the Home Tour or at the Kirkland Museum!

BoMo for the DenMo

Though it’s not about Denver, the must-have coffee table book for any modern home (Denver and beyond) would be Barbara Bestor’s Bohemian Modern – Living In Silver Lake . This book is a fabulous collection of everything modern and is based in the birthplace of modern – Silver Lake, CA – a small, eclectic and unique community just outside Los Angeles. The book is a detailed tour of the modernist movement that Silver Lake encompasses.  The book is 300 pages of modern architecture, landscape architecture, remodeled homes, new homes, restaurants, cafes and artists. It is a journey through one communities modernist roots. If you have any interest in learning more about modern architecture this is THE handbook to get you up-to-speed.

The beautiful book also adds to an aesthetically-pleasing coffee table. Guaranteed every guest in your home will pick up this book and lose themselves on page 1. The book is overflowing with gorgeous pictures and details of every room in the house, yards of all sizes and in-depth interviews of great modern architects.

So as Denver moves into the Modern Architecture movement, will we one day soon have as beautiful a publication as BoMo – of course it will be named DenMo. Are you a DenMo?

P.S. You won’t find BoMo at the Tattered Cover but Amazon has plenty of copies and it only take a few days.

Connect with me on Dwell Connect

I’m amazed at the sheer volume that this blog is generating. But one weird thing about it is that the readers rarely comment on the the posts. I want you to know that there’s lots of other modern homes enthusiasts here in Denver.

Maybe one way for all of us to get to know each other is through Dwell’s Connect social network. I think it’s a pretty cool idea, but there’s not to many people in Denver who have joined up. I hope I’ll see you there!

Art Deco Exhibit…

from now until June 1st at the Aurora History Museum

“On display will be examples of how the Art Deco style was utilized in building design, furniture, domestic pieces, radios, lighting, kitchen appliances, jewelry, and much more.”

I have not been to the exhibit yet, but I understand it includes a Fiestaware display and admission is FREE!

The building pictured is “Buerger Brothers” at 17th & Champa. Designed by architect Montana S. Fallis in 1929, it is considered one of Denver’s best examples of Art Deco design.
