If you already have a vital focal point in your living space, perhaps a fireplace with chimney breast that extends into the floor area, then setting a television to one side of it can often make the room seem a little out of kilter. Sometimes placing the TV above the mantel will do the job, but this is merely not practical in all rooms, especially if the fireplace is used.

Small, disc-like puck lights are easy to install almost anywhere you need added illumination, from under cabinets to inside deep drawers or in dark corners of the pantry. There are hardwired and plug in puck lights, but for the simplest installation opt for battery-operated LED pucks, which can last up to 30,000 hours and can be hung with Velcro. In-cabinet lighting. But the best part of the design is the slide-out drawers. These allow you to see what you have stored. The fact that you can slide out the drawers means you don’t have to take up the area with bulky shelving that requires more vertical space.

What you’re left with is sleek, hidden storage when the space is not in use. The shelving on the doors is also a nice touch for some added spice storage. One of the ways to maximize the benefits of added storage is to get multifunctional with your storage space. This fold-out cabinetry makes room for a small microwave. It’s also a wonderful design idea since it allows you to hide the microwave when not in use. If you’re going for a sleek, bright and modern kitchen like the one in the photo, you’ll want to hide as many bulky appliances as possible. It makes for a cleaner aesthetic.

Accent pillows in varying fabrics and shades can add another layer of depth to a room. Another opportunity to add texture is through the materials that your accessories are made from. Consider using metals, woven baskets and blankets,” says Dawn Stafford, the owner of Gathering Souls, a concierge design service in Fairfax, VA. Conceptually, texture can be a bit hard to pin down. The best way to think of it is by evaluating how an item looks like it feels. Take the picture above, for example. Consider how you’re easily able to tell that the surface of the coffee table feels rough, while the blanket on the couch is soft. Successful interior design is all about layering these contrasts. When you’re sprucing up a room on a budget, take stock of the textures in the accessories you already own. Then, look for additional items that would serve as their opposite. If need be, consider moving your existing accessories to different rooms as a way of giving your home an update that’s free of charge.

Here are some helpful tips to overcome common design challenges and create a happy and functional room for your young roommates. Designing a room for a brother and a sister doesn’t have to be challenging. In fact, it’s probably the easiest challenge to overcome when planning a shared room. Your first step is to select an underlying color palette for the main elements of the room (walls, rug, furniture) that is gender neutral…and, if they’re old enough to chime in, that each sibling gives the thumbs up. Color combos such as white and grey, turquoise and white or a mix of primary colors work well for both boys and girls.

These long, narrow lights are installed directly onto the underside of your cabinetry, making them ideal for illuminating countertops and prep areas. LED light bars come in a wide variety of lengths and they’re linkable, so even long countertops can be fully and evenly illuminated. They can be either hardwired into the wall for a seamless look, or plugged in for easy installation.

For instance, the design above combines a bright yellow grout with a light blue tile. The yellow against the cool tile color makes it somewhat of a statement look. A bolder look involves using bright grout against dark tile or dark grout against light tile. Regardless of which color combination you choose, the contrast helps the colorful grout stand out.
