That way, the light tiles don’t compete with the grout; the grout truly becomes the star of the show. For added effect, extend that light color scheme beyond tiles. For instance, in the photo above, the light tiles match a white wall and white counter space and allow the pink grout to shine.

Interior Design. “To drastically change the look and feel of a room without spending a lot of money, paint an accent wall,” advises Todd W. G. Corder, the founder of Deja vu Decor. “A pop of color will instantly draw the eye and is a great way to liven up a room with no more than the cost of a can of paint.” Where accent walls are concerned, there are a few details to keep in mind. The first is placement. Technically, any wall can be used as an accent, but it really should highlight your focal point. In living rooms, this can mean placing the accenting color around a mantle or some built-in shelving. In bedrooms, by the headboard is best. Aesthetics are the other consideration. A bright paint color certainly does the job, but it’s not the only option. Darker neutrals like black or chocolate brown serve the same purpose. Contrasting materials can also be used. Wallpaper is an excellent choice, as is a patterned tile or even wood paneling.

But the best part of the design is the slide-out drawers. These allow you to see what you have stored. The fact that you can slide out the drawers means you don’t have to take up the area with bulky shelving that requires more vertical space.

The exciting part of creating a super fun bedroom for your young brood is accessorizing and customizing design elements to match their budding personalities. Select design elements that make the room feel like it belongs to both of them. Personalize accessories throughout the room such as wall art or coat hooks. Marquee lights with their names or first initial add a pop of energy and excitement to any space. Likewise, subtly add gender specific themes in one or two accessories, but keep them color coordinated. For example when accessorizing with red, try a throw pillow with a red fire engine for him, and a pillow with a red flower or heart for her. Storage that is complementary to the design scheme but specific for each gender (think charcoal for boys and yellow for girls) can also seamlessly pull a room together.

Since grout itself sits in thin lines between tiles, place it where it’s easy to notice: around bathroom mirrors, over kitchen sinks, or behind cooktops. Placing bright colors like neon in high-traffic areas naturally draws the eye to otherwise-small details. If you really want to make people notice your bold design choice, try opting for colorful grout between smaller tiles on the floor. It pulls focus to an area that doesn’t often get attention — the floor — while creating a unique visual treat.

Accent pillows in varying fabrics and shades can add another layer of depth to a room. Another opportunity to add texture is through the materials that your accessories are made from. Consider using metals, woven baskets and blankets,” says Dawn Stafford, the owner of Gathering Souls, a concierge design service in Fairfax, VA. Conceptually, texture can be a bit hard to pin down. The best way to think of it is by evaluating how an item looks like it feels. Take the picture above, for example. Consider how you’re easily able to tell that the surface of the coffee table feels rough, while the blanket on the couch is soft. Successful interior design is all about layering these contrasts. When you’re sprucing up a room on a budget, take stock of the textures in the accessories you already own. Then, look for additional items that would serve as their opposite. If need be, consider moving your existing accessories to different rooms as a way of giving your home an update that’s free of charge.

Shelving of various heights on the doors makes it a good space for storing a variety of items. Whether you have a small kitchen space or a large one, a fold-out table can help add extra floor space. It’s out when you need to eat and away when you don’t. Gone are the days of trying to find a place for the kitchen table or stepping around one.

Here are some helpful tips to overcome common design challenges and create a happy and functional room for your young roommates. Designing a room for a brother and a sister doesn’t have to be challenging. In fact, it’s probably the easiest challenge to overcome when planning a shared room. Your first step is to select an underlying color palette for the main elements of the room (walls, rug, furniture) that is gender neutral…and, if they’re old enough to chime in, that each sibling gives the thumbs up. Color combos such as white and grey, turquoise and white or a mix of primary colors work well for both boys and girls.

It makes sense, then, for a leader in office design (like Steelcase) to look to a leader in home decor (like West Elm). By mirroring what we love about our homes in our workplaces, we might just fall in love with where we work, too. And employees who like where they work are more likely to show up on time, be creatively stimulated and stay in their positions long-term. In short, investing in the products of this new Steelcase and West Elm partnership could help companies keep turnover down and build their best teams.

In order to ensure that your new colorful grout doesn’t go unnoticed, you can match the grout color to other accent walls, like in the photo above. Doing so adds cohesion to the space. And since an accent wall puts people in the mindset of that color, the grout pops all the more. To get this effect, you can either paint a traditional accent wall or use an adjoining wall with tiles that match the grout color. The room in the photo above elected for both options, so don’t feel limited to just one style here. You can even paint a door or have cabinetry that matches the grout color.
